Microsoft Edge browser new great extension: Office Online. … how to use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Sway Online without needing Office installed

Some time ago I already wrote a post about one of the new preview extensions for Microsoft Edge (the Microsoft Translator) even though other great extensions were already available (e.g. Page Analyzer)Now, new extensions has been released for the Windows 10 Insider Preview and especially one is worth mentioning: Office OnLine.

As stated in the note of this extension, it allows to “use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Sway Online without needing Office installed. The Office Online extension is the quickest way to view, edit, create Office files in Microsoft Edge! You can also quickly access your recent files, thanks to integration with OneDrive and OneDrive for Business“.

So you can go to the Edge right top menu and choose Extensions -> Get extensions from the Store (or directly click on that link I copied).

Choose Extensions -> Get extensions from the Store

Choose Extensions -> Get extensions from the Store

Install and turn it on that extension:

Download and install the Office Online extension

Turn on the Office Online extension

It is convenient to set on the Show button next the address bar, in order to have an icon displayed and so have an easier access to that feature:

You can then choose where to save the files (e.g. OneDrive, OneDrive for Business), allowing the access to your cloud space to that extension:

From now on, you will have a shortcut to the more recent opened files, you can open whatever Office file you have in the cloud or locally on your PC, create a new one … without having any Office installed on you PC or any Office 365 subscription!!!

The Office Online extension is already great, but it should be even better if it will allow to open an Office file simply dragging it into that browser or possibly choosing Edge from the “Open with” item in the right click menu.

It is not still possible a drag&drop to open an Office file with Edge

Here you can find the official Windows 10 Roadmap, even though in an agile programming and continuous delivery (surely followed by Microsoft) any roadmap can be changed on the basis of user’s feedbacks and suggestions …
… from there you can see if Microsoft Edge extensions for Windows 10 Mobile are now ‘in development’ or not. Microsoft published a Windows 10 feature roadmap last month with confirmation that extensions support is coming to Edge on Windows 10 Mobile … but actually this voice disappeared, surely because other issues became more relevant at this stage, … but it should remaine in the backlog! So it is only a matter of time! ;-).
